About

I am a firefighter and paramedic in Utah. I am also a graduate student in theology, and I teach. This site is where the second and third of those live.

Before the fire service I was a combat engineer in the Marine Corps. Both jobs taught me the same thing in different accents: the details you skip are the ones that hurt someone later. That instinct is most of why I approach Scripture the way I do.

I am working through a master’s in theological studies, and I lead a young adults group and help with a new believers class at my church. Most of what ends up on this site started as something I built because I needed it for a class I was teaching and could not find a version of it that did the job.

What I am after

Not novelty. There is no shortage of people offering a reading of the Bible nobody has thought of before, and that is usually a warning sign rather than a selling point. What I care about is method: whether a reading can survive the questions you would ask of any other text, and whether the person teaching it will show you the work.

So the tools here are built to be run, not admired. The traps are real misreadings, stated in the voice of people who hold them, because a misreading you have caricatured is one you have not actually understood. And every one of them ends with a test you perform yourself rather than a verdict you take from me.

Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Acts 17:11
A standing invitation

If you think I have gotten something wrong, tell me. I would rather be corrected than consistent. That is not false modesty; it is the only posture that makes the rest of this worth doing.
